Blood Pressure Testing

According to The Blood Pressure Association, around 16 million people in the UK have high blood pressure, with many more unaware that they have the condition. The Kings Oak Hospital is just one of the health providers in the local area taking part in a national drive to encourage people to find out what their blood pressure levels are – and what they can do to bring it down.

Having your blood pressure checked and knowing your numbers is one of the easiest ways to keep a check on your heart’s health. Lowering your numbers – whatever the level – will lower the risk of a heart attack or stroke.

Dr Saboor, Consultant Physician at The Kings Oak said: “High blood pressure is a serious condition – it causes half of all stroke and heart disease in the UK – but effectively addressed and managed, it is preventable. More than one third of the adult population in the UK has high blood pressure, yet less than half of them are diagnosed. Prevention is always better than cure and we are pleased to provide expert resources as part of our commitment to providing quality care in the community”.

Keep your blood pressure under control:

Dr Saboor is urging everyone to incorporate five simple lifestyle steps to help beat the pressure:

  • Cut down on salt – remember 75 per cent of the salt we consume is already in processed foods, so it is important to check labels. Use herbs, lemon or lime juice, garlic or onions rather than salt to add flavour to food.
  • Increase potassium intake – have at least five portions of fruits and vegetables a day – potassium helps to lower blood pressure and is found naturally in most fruits and vegetables.
  • Be active – a brisk walk for at least 30 minutes five times a week will help reduce blood pressure.
  • Maintain a healthy body weight.
  • Enjoy alcohol in moderation – a maximum of two to three units a day for women.
